How much water in the future?

Despite colder temperatures, Swiss glaciers were melting at a faster pace in the 1940s than they are today!

According to studies by Swiss scientists, this paradox is due to the diminishing effects of solar radiation through clouds and aerosols present in the atmosphere.

Nevertheless, researchers predict that in the next few years, global warming will cause the glaciers to melt more quickly than during the 1940s.

The study by Swiss scientists forms part of a larger research project measuring the impact of global warming on the Alps. It focuses on the evolution of alpine glaciers for hydraulic purposes, since it is imperative for hydroelectric companies to know what quantity of water will be available in the future. (source AFP)
